On average, a month has 4.35 weeks, or more precisely 4.348 weeks in the Gregorian calendar. In practice, every month has 4 full weeks plus a few extra days: 3 extra days in a 31-day month, 2 in a 30-day month, and none in February (except 1 in a leap year).

Where does 4.35 come from?
The average month is one-twelfth of a year. Using the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days:
- 365.2425 ÷ 12 = 30.44 days per average month
- 30.44 ÷ 7 = 4.348 weeks per average month
If you use a plain 365-day year, it's 4.345 weeks. Either way, "about 4.35" is the number to remember, and it's the reason "4 weeks" and "1 month" are not the same thing: a month is usually 2–3 days longer.
Five Fridays, five weekends: extra weekdays
Because most months are 29–31 days long, some weekdays occur five times. In a 31-day month, the first three weekdays of the month each appear five times. For example, October 2026 starts on a Thursday, so it has five Thursdays, five Fridays and five Saturdays. A 30-day month has two weekdays that appear five times, and February has none, except in a leap year.
This matters for anything that happens weekly:
- Weekly pay: months with five paydays come up roughly four times a year.

- Weekly bills and classes: a subscription or lesson charged per session costs more in a "five-week" month.
How many rows does a month take on a calendar?
A printed calendar usually needs 5 rows for a month, sometimes 6 (when a 31-day month starts on Saturday or Sunday, or a 30-day month starts on Sunday, with Monday-first weeks), and occasionally only 4 (a 28-day February that starts on Monday). Converting weekly and monthly amounts
Budgets, salaries and rent use different periods, and dividing by 4 is a common mistake. The accurate multipliers are:

Multiplying weekly pay by 4 underestimates your monthly income by about 8%, because it ignores the extra 2–3 days in most months.
