About First Day of Summer

Astronomical summer starts at the June solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

First Day of Summer falls on the June solstice (around June 21). In 2027 it lands on a Monday, June 21, 2027.

From today that is 262 days, or 37 weeks and 3 days. The wait includes 186 business days and 38 weekends.

When does summer start?

There are two common definitions. Astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the June solstice, around June 20–21, and ends at the September equinox. Meteorological summer, used by weather services because it makes record-keeping simpler, covers the three warmest months: June, July and August. Many people also think of US summer as running from Memorial Day to Labor Day, or from the end of the school year to back to school.

The summer solstice

The solstice is the moment when the Earth's North Pole is tilted most directly towards the Sun. It brings the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere: about 15 hours of daylight in New York, more than 18 hours in Stockholm, and continuous daylight north of the Arctic Circle. The Sun reaches its highest point in the sky and appears overhead at noon along the Tropic of Cancer. The exact time of the solstice varies by a few hours from year to year, so its date in your local time zone can be June 20, 21 or occasionally 22.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the June solstice is the shortest day of the year and the start of winter. Australia, South Africa and Argentina have summer from December to February.

Why summer is hot

Summer isn't caused by the Earth being closer to the Sun; in fact, the Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. It is caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis, about 23.4 degrees. In summer your hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, so sunlight arrives at a steeper angle and days are longer, delivering more energy each day.

Midsummer traditions

  • Stonehenge: thousands gather to watch the sunrise align with the ancient monument.
  • Midsummer in Sweden and Finland: maypole dancing, flower crowns and bonfires.
  • St. John's Eve: bonfires across Europe around June 23–24.
  • Inti Raymi: the Inca festival of the Sun, celebrated in Cusco, Peru, at the June (winter) solstice.

Counting down to summer

Whether you're waiting for the solstice, the last day of school or a vacation, a countdown helps with planning: book trips and summer camps early, and check the last day of school and Fourth of July countdowns for the season's milestones.
